About Alex Walker
I was born and raised in Virginia. I have been a software engineer in Virginia, New York, and Massachusetts before settling in California. While living and working in the Hudson Valley of New York served as vice-president of the Northern Dutchess NAACP and co-chair of the Dutchess County Committee Against Racism in Poughkeepsie, New York. I have contributed freelance writing to The Poughkeepsie Journal and Taconic Newspapers in the Hudson Valley, the Somerville Journal and the Somerville Community News in Somerville, Massachusetts, and the Milpitas Post in Milpitas, California.
I have also contributed commentary to the Black Commentator, California Greening, and web sites. I Graduated from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and attended graduate school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
Just recently, my commentary on the “race talk” in the Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama campaign was posted on a national web site: “Dissent: No More Race Talk,” by Alex Walker, The Black Commentator, May 22, 2008).
The photo at the top is a snapshot of Cathy and me with my complex extended family at a Christmas vacation in the San Bernadino Mountains (For years I’ve tried to get this crew to pose for an old-fashioned Sears family photo but I guess they think that is too bourgeois). The picture includes my wife, Cathy Deppe, her two daughters, Amanda and Jennifer, Cathy’s first husband, George Touchton, one of the two sons-in-law, Robyn, two granddaughters and two grandsons.
Republicans say we are not a “Real American” family; Democrats say Alex Walker is not a “Real Black Man” — Two reasons why I am a proud, active, registered member of the California Green Party.
